Until a while ago this great bird was only wintering in the Iberian Peninsula, but in recent years it has settled in reservoirs and rivers in the interior, where it has begun to reproduce.
Its plumage is black with lustrous green, and a wide white spot on the face.
It is estimated that it can eat its own weight in fish and small crabs each day.
